$17 to a Family that Lost Everything...
Our local team leader shares the following urgent, yet tragic, story. He spoke to one of the relief leaders and organizers in the Monywa region, who is now trying to support 46 families who lost everything after the military burned down their village. As our team leaders shares, this woman has been collecting aid even from those still in Myanmar who have very little left themselves, but understandably, it hasn’t been enough to cover the needs of those who are now thrown into the wild with only the clothes on their backs. For that reason, they ask our donor support network if any further support may be available for the challenges these families are now facing. As just $17 can cover one family’s immediate needs, even smaller contributions make a difference!
“I recently spoke with a brave young woman who has been organizing peaceful protests against the military without rest since Feb 1, 2021. She is active in the Monywa area and has been moving from village to village to avoid arrest by the military. She has also helped many villagers whose houses were burned to the ground during raids by the army. She is now trying to obtain aid for 46 families from [Redacted] Village which was recently burned down. The village is in [Redacted] Township on the bank of Chindwin River. She wants to raise donations to give each refugee family 30,000-50,000 kyats (around USD $10-17) if possible. As she is the leader of a relief organization active in Monywa District, important people from villages in townships such as Pale, Kani, Ayadaw, Tase, Depayin, Ye-U and Budalin have contacted seeking aid for villages in their areas that were also burned down. Her organization can also arrange donations of material aid like food and clothing.
She said the refugees are desperate for help from the international community. Burmese people from Sagaing Region have been a great help through donations as small as a single dollar, but they now have so little left. Although this will not provide sustainable help over multiple months, it can provide some relief and let them resume farming after losing nearly everything, including homes, crops and cattle, to the marauding military. Please do not hesitate and offer what you can in this moment of urgent need!”
