Journalism when it is most needed

Last month we informed you about our support of a local group committed to journalism, as well as documenting the ongoing crimes against humanity being committed by the Burmese military. The members of this courageous group are risking their lives to make sure that the Tatmadaw is not able to operate with impunity. We thank you so much for your continued donations, which allow us to sponsor the selfless actions of groups like this one! Following they have provided a more detailed account as to their mission and ongoing activities.

Collecting Daily News Updates

The journalists engaged by the program produce daily updates, which will comprise photos, videos, news and articles, interviews and other multimedia stories. The updates, that will be based on real time fact checked and verified information will be disseminated to both local and international communities.

Operational related equipment (Camera, Phone ,Laptop, media platforms) support

Some of the journalists have lost their equipment, while others do not require some equipment in a normal situation. Our rapid assessment shows that they need the operational support to carry out their job. Hence, the operation will provide them with equipment such as camera, phone, laptop and media platforms, like websites.

Women stories through story-telling and arts

Women of all walks of lives have risked their lives, both at the frontline and background, to support the revolution. It is crucial to document the remarkable contributions made by women! This activity will ensure recognition of the women through storytelling and arts in ‘her story’ series. The story will recognize/identify their roles in multiple layers for the fight and struggles against the military dictatorship. The women’s stories will build on scholarship and history on women’s contribution in the revolution.

Emergency support to needy women and women journalists

Activity will provide needy women and women journalists with emergency support in monetary and in-kind forms. Here, the ‘needy women’ refers to the women identified by our plan while covering their stories. Such support will boost the confidence of both the women in stories and the journalists in standing firm in the emergency situation.

Relocation of journalists to safe houses

Security and safety of the journalists is a key concern. Our operation aims to create a safe house, where the journalists will be relocated. From the safe house, they can find themselves safe and secure, and confidently report the incidents in a free manner.

Website development and maintenance

This activity will create a web platform in both languages - English and Burmese -- for authentic news, reports and data. The news and reports gathered by the journalists engaged in this activity will be published on the website and will be made accessible to everyone.

Emergency support to the family of the arrested journalist

The families of the journalists in detention are equally affected and their situation is getting worse due to a lack of financial resources. This activity will provide emergency support to families. The amount of emergency support may vary as per the need and situation of the family.

Supporting to ethnic Media from Kayah, Kachin and Kayin

Myanmar Pressphoto Agency (MPA) is collaborating some of the activities with ethnic media from Kayah, Kayin and Kachin at the moment. We are also supporting them media related equipment and other technical skills.
